The importance of IT Asset Management

Know what IT Assets you have, including your people.

The importance of IT Asset Management cannot be under estimated.

The first step for an organisation embarking on the evolution of their IT Asset Management is to know what IT assets they have, and need, to deliver an agreed set of services to their own internal staff and their customers. In addition they need to know how these assets move, are impacted, changed as they progress through the ITIL process chain and along their lifecycle from the point of introduction to that of disposal. This will help define and refine the process and technology requirements to support the Asset journey, and also more importantly the hand-offs between different parties, allowing roles and responsibilities to be clearly stated.

The diagram below shows the central nature of the tight coupling between Asset, Configuration and Change Management. An Asset must be tracked through its lifecycle, its data made available to the ITSM processes such as Event, Incident, Problem and SLA Management in order for them to operate effectively and ensure that its integrity is preserved.
